Day 1 - 13/10/2014

The project brief

Today was the day we recieved our project brief. First we had to decide on a team. The team was formed:

Jeff Aitken

The brief is to deploy a private cloud:

Goal

For this assignment you are required to design, deploy and evaluate a Hybrid Cloud. You are free to choose any combination of a Private Cloud platform and a Public Cloud.
Once you have decided which combination you will implement, you should go through the following process:
- Study the installation pre-requisites for your Private Cloud Platform
- Install and configure your Private Cloud
- Understand how to use the scaling and monitoring features
- Provision some resources in the Public Cloud
- Document the steps taken to complete the above steps at a level of detail so that another person can reproduce your work
- Implement a Hybrid Cloud by connecting your Private Cloud and Public Cloud.
- Document and report the results and implement any changes required to complete a separate security report detailing how relevant security principles and protocols have been implemented and tested in order to defend the system you have developed against breaches in integrity and security. The security report should be limited to a maximum of 2500 words.

Brainstorming

We did a bit of brainstorming about how we were going to deal with this.

We agreed that we were going to:

1. Build a private cloud, which when certain resource thresholds were reached, would spin up vms in the public cloud and use those resources.
2. When the resource threshold was reached on the way down, we would remove the workload from public servers and bring the workload back into the private cloud.
3. All of this should be automatic.
4. We would enable this without the use of 'out of the box' tools (such as vcloud director)
5. We would need to make sure the process was secure.
6. We are going to use different hypervisors for the public and private cloud
